French

In our schools, we are committed to providing a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world and interest in other cultures. We aim to engage and enthuse learners to learn other languages beyond their school experience.  Through our teaching, we enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to begin to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.  We also aim to provide opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation:

Our planning for the teaching of French is based on the ‘Language Angels’ programme plans and is taught to our KS2 pupils during a weekly lesson.

• Children who are confident to have a go at speaking using the phrases and vocabulary they have learnt.
